Urban Hardwood Initiatives

Cecil Andrews College
Seville Grove | Department of Education Initiative
Sometimes the most rewarding timber recovery projects aren't just about the timber itself, but about what that timber can go on to become.
At Cecil Andrews College, a large Jarrah tree had to be removed following an unfortunate incident in which a falling limb injured a student.
Rather than see the entire tree go to waste, the school recognised an opportunity to turn a difficult situation into something positive.
The decision was made to salvage the Jarrah and have it milled into usable timber that could be incorporated into the college's woodworking program, giving students the opportunity to create something beautiful from a challenging situation.
The Cecil Andrews College project is a great example of how timber recovery can deliver benefits that go well beyond the value of the wood itself.

Driveway Milling
Marangaroo
Not every milling project starts with a paddock full of logs. Sometimes, it’s just two logs in a driveway.
For this job, Western Timber Recovery headed to Sam’s property in Marangaroo to mill one jarrah log and one wandoo log. With our portable sawmill set up in the driveway, we turned those logs into usable timber without them needing to leave the property.
It’s a simple project that shows exactly what our service is about: bringing the mill to the timber, even when there are only a couple of logs to work with.

Milling Giants
Byford
Some trees are more than just trees — they carry history, presence and a real sense of place.
This project involved an extraordinary Jarrah, measuring approximately 3 metres long and 1.35 metres wide, captured halfway through the slabbing process. Sadly, the tree had died during the summer heat, but rather than allowing such a remarkable tree to be lost, the decision was made to preserve it in a form that can continue to be appreciated for generations to come.
With age estimates suggesting this Jarrah may have predated settlement, it represents far more than a piece of timber. It is a part of Western Australia’s natural history, and slabbing it offers a way to honour that history while giving it a new purpose.
There’s something powerful about sitting around a table cut from a tree with this kind of age and presence.
These slabs will become more than functional pieces. They will be a place for people to gather, share meals, tell stories and appreciate the remarkable timber beneath them.
At Western Timber Recovery, this is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do: helping exceptional trees live on in a meaningful way, long after they’ve come down.
This giant Jarrah may have died, but by preserving it through slabbing, its story will continue for many years to come.

Development Clearing
Chidlow
When trees have to be cleared for a building development, their story doesn’t have to end there.
For Steve, the jarrah trees removed during clearing were an opportunity to bring something meaningful into his new home. Rather than letting that timber go to waste, he wanted to incorporate it into the design through features such as benchtops, shelving and other timber details.
Western Timber Recovery slabbed the logs to his specifications. Now, while his dream home is being built, the recovered jarrah is seasoning for its next chapter.
